How Do I Know If I TMJ Therapy?

If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s possible that you may be suffering from a TMJ disorder:

  • Pain or tenderness in the jaw joint

  • Limited jaw movement or difficulty opening your mouth

  • Clicking, popping, or grating sounds when you move your jaw

  • Headaches or neck pain

  • Pain in or around the ear

  • Tingling or numbness in the face

Our Approach & What to Expect on Your First Visit

At PROACT, we can assist in reducing your discomfort and improving your jaw function by creating a customized treatment plan for your condition.

During our conversation, we will explore the underlying reasons for your TMD, and provide you with information on various aspects, such as maintaining correct posture and body mechanics, finding the right resting position for your tongue, consuming a soft diet where necessary, engaging in exercise, and establishing a self-management routine.

Your physical therapist may employ a range of hands-on techniques such as soft-tissue release to alleviate muscle spasms and tightness, which could include work on your face and jaw, as well as inside your mouth. In addition, they will use joint mobilization to tackle any stiffness in your neck and jaw and help restore TMJ movement. Your physical therapist will also instruct you on targeted therapeutic exercises to perform throughout the day to help break the pain and spasm cycle, balance the involved muscles, and improve joint mobility to ensure proper alignment of your head, neck, and jaw. Finally, they will provide stress management techniques and psychological support, offering positive encouragement and making appropriate referrals to other healthcare providers if required.
